Just presently is the administration clients voice being perceived once more. (Adams et al, 2009) The Poor Law was the premise of the advancement of administrations for the twentieth century, including the national protection act, these new administrations were acquainted with abstain from depending on the Poor Laws. (Alcock, 2003) The administration laid the premise of things to come social administrations, the significant concern was that all territories ought to be given similar administrations, these new administrations were given away from The Poor Law to dodge the affiliation. Descartes and the Mind Essay - 1689 Words

The topic of the mind and how do we know has been around since the beginning of time. It is one of those questions that will most likely never be answered. I mean, the mind itself is so perplexing that we are still learning stuff about it daily. One question that Descartes proposed was â€Å"how do we know?† we still are pondering this one today. We ask it almost every day, maybe not in that way but in some form or another. So honestly, how do we know? Whenever Descartes started studying about the mind he denounced all of his previous opinions and started fresh. He first stated that â€Å"knowledge is seen as a building in which all the superstructure is resting on a foundation, and the building is only as strong as its foundation†Ã¢â‚¬ ¦show more content†¦So he began to ponder on how to prove that he truly did exist. He finally came up with this: Thought exists; it alone cannot be separated from me. I am; I exist – this is certain. But for how long? For as long as I am thinking; for perhaps it could also come to pass that if I were to cease all thinking I would then utterly cease to exist. At this time I admit nothing that is not necessarily true. I am therefore precisely nothing but a thinking thing; that is a mind, or intellect, or understanding, or reason – words of whose meanings I was previously ignorant. Yet I am a true thing and am truly existing; but what kind of thing? I have said it already: a thinking thing (Meditation II 31). So in proving that he existed he also proved who he was or who we are. We are â€Å"thinking things† things that can function as long as we think, but the moment that we stop thinking is the moment that we no longer exist. So is that the moment we die? Or is it something entirely different? So through this he proved that anything that he cannot doubt then that is what he is. And whatever he can doubt, then he is not. He now had the knowledge of knowing about himself of who and what he was. But there was a problem with this, that even though one doubted something then it could still be true. One could doubt that he/she won a race even though they did win. Snowball and Napoleon held a great deal of contrast between the way they each ruled over Animal Farm/Manor Farm. The only thing he did lack, was the ability of pursuasion to the other animals. Snowball had all the right ideas, all to better the whole farm. Napoleon, on the other hand, had a knack for stealing other animals ideas, then telling the rest it was his and getting credit for it. His ideas only seemed to benefit the pigs and not the animals. It was this, that led to the crumbling of the farm. Napoleons obsession with becoming the ruler is what got Snowball nearly killed by the dogs. ..in a plot made by Napoleon. Which then produced a whole new rebellion not of the animals to the humans, but of the animals to the pigs. So for these reasons, Snowball showed better qualities for leadership than Napoleon because he wasnt selfish and thought about the future of Animal Farm. First, the dominated farm animals viewed Napoleon and Snowball differently at different times throughout the book. The way the animals reacted to each leader brought upon new problems of the farm. The animals respected Snowball, and believed that his teachings were all true and had a good cause. Although Snowball and Napoleon had superior qualities leadership, it was clearly Snowball who had the better qualities for running a farm. Under Snowballs rule, the animals were generally content with what was going on and were all for it if it was to better the farm. It was obvious that Napoleon had the better half of getting his own way on the farm. However, the animals had some problems with Napoleon but they didnt know haw to express their feelings and show him that they didnt like the way he ran things. It was the animals ignorance that helped keep Napoleon in rule for as long as it was. The responses were so different between the animals that it must have been a drastic change between Snowball and Napoleon. The response was different because Snowball had such a bond between him and the animals. Napoleon, being the big pig that he is, was not to be messes with on the farm and because of that the animals were trying to get around the problems themselves and not go straight to the problem. ..Napoleon. With Snowball in rule, the animals were more at ease going to him and talking about what bothers them. In conclusion, Snowball was a better leader for the farm than Napoleon, the animals reacted more harshly to Napoleon than to Snowball, and this reaction was obviously because of Napoleons selfish use of totalitarianism. Few Animals, besides the pigs, actually believed in Napoleons teachings. An even bigger portion, believed in Napoleon not because they liked him, but because they were too ignorant and afraid to see the other side. And mostly all the animals were against him, but did not know what to do about it or how to get him to change. That is why the farm flourished under Snowballs rule, but crumbled under Napoleons rule.

The Major Conflict In The Novel, Cry The Beloved Country, Is An Inner

The major conflict in the novel, Cry the Beloved Country, is an inner uncertainty within the characters. The author, Alan Paton, shows this inner conflict from two perspectives; the Europeans and the Native South Africans. These two groups also have inconsistencies in their conscious to resolve. The black Natives are struggling between tradition and the new world. The Natives are forfeiting their old values as they progress towards the mode of the big city life. The Europeans are also confused. Many Europeans want to help the Natives, but are faced with following old tradition. Conventionally, these two groups should live independently. The changing of customs and values created apprehension and fear for both groups of people. Steven Kumalo, a Native priest, faced inner conflicts throughout the book. Kumalo had dreams of restoring the tribe and reuniting his family. He received a letter telling him his sister was ill in Johannesburg. Steven overcomes his fears of the big city and attempts to reunite his broken family. Steven hoped to find his sister Gertrude, brother John, and son Absalom. Each of these characters rejected their old values. His brother, John, was a corrupt politician. Kumalo's sister, Gertrude, was a prostitute. Absalom, Stephen's son, killed Arthur Jarvis. Kumalo struggled with feelings about his family members. He continued to encounter the clash of two different worlds affecting their lives. The Europeans were caught between tradition and the modernistic ways. The Europeans had been taught they were a superior race. Many Europeans doubted their traditional views and lifestyles. During the Native's bus boycott, a few Europeans voluntarily drove the Natives so they did not have to walk. The old routine customs were questioned, and challenged. In this case, the rules were ignored. Customs were also ignored during Absalom's trial. Absalom Kumalo, Stephen's son, was found guilty of murdering Arthur Jarvis. Absalom's white friend broke the color line while leaving the courtroom. Carmichael ran to help Stephen who was about to collapse from devastating grief for his son. Helping a friend, rather than obeying tradition was Carmichael's response to this inner conflict. Jarvis and Kumalo began interacting with each other when they returned to Natal. Mr. Jarvis's grandson visited Stephen's home a few times before returning to Johannesburg. Kumalo taught the young boy the Native Zulu language. The boy was a respectful and attentive student. Mr. Jarvis's grandson challenged the old ways and accepted his teacher. It was much easier for the younger generations to accept the challenges of change. The younger generations had different views about racial issues than their parents. Mr. Kumalo hoped the younger generations would prosper and live peacefully. James Jarvis and Stephen Kumalo returned to their homes in Natal. A deadly drought had devastated the land. Mr. Kumalo turned to tradition for an end to the drought. He visited the tribal chief for help. The chief told Kumalo there is nothing to be done and they will pray for rain. Stephen Kumalo and many others viewed the chief as just a figurehead. Kumalo's trip to Johannesburg taught him to accept new ways and ideas. Stephen Kumalo questioned traditional solutions to the current problems in his land. James Jarvis returned to help the Native tribal community. He hired a new teacher for the school. The teacher informed the Natives of new farming methods. The new knowledge helped the natives through the drought. Mr. Jarvis also gave the Natives milk for the young children until they could get enough of their own. He also offered to build Stephen a new church. Jarvis ignored belief and custom to help people in need, regardless of their skin color. Alan Paton's novel presents the personal conflict of Jarvis and Kumalo. Through their lives, the larger conflict between the races in South Africa and for all humanity is presented by this wonderful author.

The Evolution of Greek Tragedy

The Evolution of Greek Tragedy Today, a trip to the theater is still a special event, but in Ancient  Athens, it wasnt just a time for cultural enrichment or entertainment. It was a religious, competitive, and civic festival event, part of the annual City (or Greater) Dionysia: We might want to imagine the atmosphere of the ancient drama festivals as a combination of Mardi Gras, the gathering of the faithful in St Peters Square on Easter Day, the crowds that throng the Mall on the Fourth of July, and the hype of Oscars night.- Ian C. Storey When Cleisthenes reformed Athens to make it more democratic, it is thought that he included competition between the groups of citizens in the form of dramatic, performing dithyrambic choruses. Be that as it may, Tragedy- as also Comedy- was at first mere improvisation. The one originated with the authors of the  Dithyramb, the other with those of the phallic songs, which are still in use in many of our cities. Tragedy advanced by slow degrees; each new element that showed itself was in turn developed. Having passed through many changes, it found its natural form, and there it stopped.- Aristotle Poetics Taxes,  A Civic Obligation Well in advance of the Elaphebolion (an Athenian month that ran from late March to early April) event, the city magistrate selected 3 patrons of the arts (choregoi) to finance the performances. It was an onerous form of taxation (liturgy) the wealthy were required to perform- but not every year. And the wealthy had a choice: they could supply Athens with a performance or a battleship. This  obligation included: Housing and feeding the chorus and actors.Selecting chorus members (young men about to enter the military).Hiring a chorus director (didaskalos) who trained the 12-15 non-professional dancers (choreuts), for a year, to perform, sing, and dance in the chorus.Providing a place to train.Paying for a dedication to Dionysus if he won. Professionals and Amateur Actors While the chorus was composed of (well-trained) non-professionals, the playwright and actors had, as Didaskalia puts it, leisure with a passion for the theater. Some of the actors became such polished celebrities their participation would give an unfair advantage, so the lead actor, protagonist, was assigned by lot to a playwright who was expected to compose a tetralogy, direct, choreograph, and act in his own plays. A tetralogy consisted of three tragedies and a satyr play- like a dessert at the end of the heavy, serious drama. Partly humorous or farcical, satyr-plays featured the half human, half animal creatures known as satyrs. Visual Aids for the Audience By convention, the actors in tragedy appeared larger than life. Since there were about 17,000 open-air seats in the theater of Dionysus (on the south slope of the Acropolis), going more than halfway around the circular dance floor (orchestra), this exaggeration must have made the actors more recognizable. They wore long, colorful robes, high headdresses, cothurnoi (shoes), and masks with largemouth holes to facilitate ease of speech. Men played all the parts. One actor might play more than one role, since there were only 3 actors, even by Euripides (c. 484-407/406) day. A century earlier, in the 6th century, when the first dramatic competition was held, there was only one  actor whose role was to interact with the chorus. The semi-legendary playwright of the first play with an actor was Thespis (from whose name comes the word thespian). Stage Effects In addition to the actors accouterments, there were elaborate devices for special effects. For instance, cranes could whisk gods or people on and off stage. These cranes were called mechane or machina in Latin; hence, our term deus ex machina. The skene (from which, scene) a building or tent at the back of the stage that was used from the time of Aeschylus (c. 525-456), could be painted to provide scenery. The skene was at the edge of the circular orchestra (dance floor of the chorus). The skene also provided a flat roof for action, a backstage for the actors preparation, and a door. The ekkyklema was a contraption for rolling scenes or people onto the stage. Dionysia and the Theater At the City Dionysia, the tragedians each presented a tetralogy- four plays, consisting of three tragedies and a satyr play. The theater was in the temenos (sacred precinct) of Dionysus Eleuthereus. The priest was seated in the center of the first row of the theatron. It may be that there were originally 10 wedges (kekrides) of seats to correspond with the 10 tribes of Attica, but the number was 13 by the 4th century B.C. Tragedy Terms Tragic Irony  happens when the audience knows what is going to happen but the actor is still ignorant. Hamartia:  The downfall of the tragic hero is caused by hamartia. This isnt a willful act in violation of the laws of the gods, but a mistake or excess.Hubris:  Excessive pride can lead to the downfall of the tragic hero.Peripeteia:  A  sudden reversal of fortune.Catharsis:  Ritual cleansing and emotional cleansing by the end of the tragedy. Note's response Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Note's response - Essay Example Social sites such as Facebook and tweeter have provided a platform of exchanging ideas and establishing networks although it is not all who embrace them for various reasons. It is insightful to note that blogs are preferred for news because many are specialized and dedicated to news provision only (Sacco, 2012). The assertion that it is not true that everybody has access to new media landscape is correct. However, it is not true that one’s ability to afford a computer and other accessories that allow access to the internet is the only determining factor why some people have not accessed the internet. This is because there are cyber cafes, which one could go to in order to access the internet at a fee. The questions of how there are people who have not interacted with the new media or the telephones are pertinent. They are kind that those who have interacted with these technologies ask after using them for so long that they lose memory of how they survived without them (Sacco, 2012). It is true that journalistic approach to the coverage of different issues seeks to uphold fairness and balance. However, the assertion that scientific issues deserve more scientific inquiry and insight than the fairness and balance elements of the journalistic approach is not entirely correct. If these elements were lacking, purely scientific information can create the sky-is-falling impression. Therefore, the two should be complementary (Sacco,

Chicago-style pizza Essay Example for Free

Chicago-style pizza Essay Pizza is a very common food Item you can find anywhere in New York, it can provide a quick fix if you are hungry but it can also have another purpose. The two most commonly found would be thesis Deep dish1 and New York style2 pizza but I believe the best pizza is home made3 since to me it promotes family togetherness. There are specialties shops like UNO’s that prepare pizza â€Å"Chicago style† which is basically deep dish pizza and has a thicker crust. Deno/des I find the pizza to be doughy and personally I am not too fond of chunky tomatoes in my sauce. In my opinion it seems to fill the pizza more than anything else. Pizza hut and Dominos also provides a deep dish option made differently without the chunky tomato sauce that I find more appealing to my taste that is not Chicago style. While they all can be a family night out for dinner this can at times become routine and boring. The common pizza shop makes a typical pizza pie we are all used to in New York, the â€Å"slice†. deno/des Some make pizza soggy, crunchy, or oily we all have our preferences and typically are drawn to those shops that make it the way we like it. This to me is a quick sit down lunch or dinner with your family, children or child then you are off again to continue your activities. There is no fun to it just becomes routine to grab a quick bite and carry on. In my opinion my personal favorite is making it at home with fresh dough purchased at my local supermarket. Deno/des My daughter helps roll out the dough on the pizza pan with a little flour so it does not stick to the pan. She also helps me shred the mozzarella cheese constantly reminding me to watch my fingers as to not get cut on the shredder. My three year old has already mastered putting the sauce on the pizza, sauce out of the can that is. We place it in the oven and wait. I have to say the bonding that takes place making pizza is priceless and the pizza we create is better than anything you can find anywhere in NYC. This also reminds me of my own childhood making pizza in the same manner with my father, these are the memories you carry on forever. To this day the pizza I made with my father only comes second to the pizza I make with my daughter. Des In conclusion I believe being a single parent myself and raising my 3 year old little girl, I would prefer making homemade pizza. The bonding that comes from the interaction of making a pizza with my daughter from scratch brings back memories of when I was a child making pizza with my parents. Those memories are everlasting. To those who do not have such memories or traditions this is an opportunity to create them while creating memories your child will always remember. The bonding and togetherness from this interaction with your child is something you cannot get from going to your local pizzeria.

The Status of Women in New Testament and Lysistrata :: Lysistrata Essays

The Status of Women in New Testament and Lysistrata Since the beginning of time the treatment of women has improved dramatically. In the earliest of times women were mere slaves to men. Today women are near equals in almost all fields. In 411 B.C., when Lysistrata was written, men had many stunning advantages to that of their female counterparts. Although women's rights between 30 and 100 A.D., the time of the New Testament, were still not what they are today, the treatment of women was far better. Overall, the equality of women in the New Testament exceeds that of the women in Lysistrata in three major ways: physical mobility, society's view of women's nature, and women's public legal rights. Albeit in Lysistrata the women were shown as revolutionaries rising up against the men, women in classical Greece were never like that. Aristophanes created the play as a comedy, showing how the world might be in the times of the Peloponesian war if women tried to do something. It was the women's job to stay home and tend to the house, and never leave, unlike they did in the play, the women were shown as revolutionaries rising up against the men, women in classical Greece were never like that. The activities of women in Classical Athens were confined to "bearing children, spinning and weaving, and maybe managing the domestic arrangements. No wandering in the beautiful streets for them." The suppression of women went so far as to divide the house into separate areas for males and females. While the women stayed home, the men were usually out fighting, and when they weren't fighting, they were entertaining their friends and having sexual favors performed by courtesans. The rights of women in early Christianity were a far cry from today, although they were much better off than their Athenian counterparts. In the Christian church, women were treated as equals. The first evidence of this is when the woman with hemorrhages touches Jesus' clothing and he says that her faith has made her well (Mark 5:34). This shows that both sexes are treated equally in that eyes of god even though at this time the hemorrhages that the

The Science Behind Glow-in-the-Dark Products

Glow-in-the-dark powders, glow sticks, ropes, etc., are all fun examples of products using luminescence, but do you know the science behind how it works? The Science Behind Glow-in-the-Dark Glow-in-the-dark falls under several different sciences including: Photoluminescence by definition is the emission of light from a molecule or atom that has absorbed electromagnetic energy. Examples include fluorescence and phosphorescence materials. The glow-in-the-dark plastic constellation kits that you stick on your wall or ceiling are an example of a photoluminescence-based product.Bioluminescence is the light emitted by living organisms using an internal chemical reaction (think deep sea creatures).Chemiluminescence is the emission of light without the emission of heat as the result of a chemical reaction (e.g., glowsticks),Radioluminescence is created by the bombardment of ionizing radiation. Chemiluminescence and photoluminescence are behind the majority of glow-in-the-dark products. According to Alfred University professors, the distinct difference between chemical luminescence and photoluminescence is that for light to work via chemical luminescence, a chemical reaction has to occur. However, during photoluminescence, light is released without a chemical reaction. The History of Glow-in-the-Dark Phosphorus and its various compounds are phosphorescents or materials that glow-in-the-dark. Before knowing about phosphorus, its glowing properties were reported in ancient writings. The oldest known written observations were made in China, dating back to 1000 BCE regarding fireflies and glow-worms. In 1602, Vincenzo Casciarolo discovered the phosphorus-glowing Bolognian Stones just outside of Bologna, Italy. This discovery started the first scientific study of photoluminescence. Phosphorus was first isolated in 1669 by German physician Hennig Brand. He was an alchemist who was attempting to change metals into gold when he isolated phosphorus. All photoluminescence glow-in-the-dark products contain phosphor. To make a glow-in-the-dark toy, toymakers use a phosphor that is energized by normal light and that has a very long persistence (the length of time it glows). Zinc Sulfide and Strontium Aluminate are the two most commonly used phosphors. Glowsticks Several patents were issued for Chemiluminescent Signal Devices during the early seventies that were used for naval signaling. Inventors Clarence Gilliam and Thomas Hall patented the first Chemical Lighting Device in October 1973 (Patent 3,764,796). However, it is not clear who patented the very first glowstick designed for play. In December 1977, a patent was issued for a Chemical Light Device to inventor Richard Taylor Van Zandt (U.S. Patent 4,064,428). Zandts design was the first to add a steel ball inside the plastic tube that when shook would break the glass ampoule and start the chemical reaction. Many toy glowsticks were built based on this design. Modern Glow-in-the-Dark Science Photoluminescence spectroscopy is a contactless, nondestructive method of probing the electronic structure of materials. This is from a patent-pending technology developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory that uses small organic molecule materials to create organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) and other electronics. Scientists in Taiwan say they have bred three pigs that glow-in-the-dark.
