Harrison Bergeon - 795 Words

ENC 1102 29 September 2013 Harrison Bergeron: The Danger of Total Equality Individuality is a person’s most precious virtue. Many would say that one’s individuality is the most unique of footprints to leave on this earth. A human being’s natural attributes are what the world thrives upon. The Declaration of Independence states, â€Å"All men are created equal† and Kurt Vonnegut’s story Harrison Bergeron, explores and executes this notion with such brutality that it causes reasonable apprehension to the idea of conformity. The dangers of enforced, total equality are exposed through the use of symbolism, imagery, and characterization in this short story. Vonnegut uses a couple of symbols throughout the story. Nonetheless the most†¦show more content†¦He also intensely illustrates the noises coming from that little radio in George’s ear. Every twenty seconds George winces at the horrifying clamors coming from the headset, and when asked by his Hazel what it sounds like he replies, â€Å"Sounded like somebody hitting a milk bottle with a ball peen hammer† . The everyday person would most likely rebel against such cruelty â€Å" [but] George is unable to maintain the connection...Therefore he remains content to endure the H-G s treatments†. Finally, the closing piece to make the story whole is the characterization used within the story to draw the reader into the characters. It allows you to dissect the characters and â€Å"get to know† them. The Bergeron family in its entirety is â€Å"sympathetic and likable, even though what is done to them is not†. Hazel Bergeron is painted as a quiet, and gentle woman with neither mental, nor physical handicaps because of her â€Å"perfectly average intelligence†. Despite her seemingly average intelligence and qualities, she uncovers an innate desire for some type of independence, much like her son. For example, stemming from the lack of emotion conveyed by most characters in the story, sentiment is not something frequently, if at all, expressed in the year 2081. Therefore, in the last scene, after Hazel has watched her son murdered on national television, she begins to cry. The World Of The Cold War - 980 Words

When the second world war ended in 1945, the U.S. emerged as a world power. Even though America was already a major player, the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the defeat of Germany, made sure that America stayed on top. However, when the Cold War started in 1947, the race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. for top nation was on. In the last few months of the war, the world leaders would meet and decide on how to take care of Germany and the rest of Europe when the war finally ended. It was agreed that Germany would be divided into sections, controlled by America, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and France. Roosevelt, president at the time, and Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister, both wanted Germany to have free elections, as well as all of the countries that were liberated. Stalin agreed to this but would later break his promise and installed governments dominated by Soviet Union officials. In 1947, President Truman issued a doctrine that offered support to any countries threatened by Soviet forces or communist ideas. The doctrine was seen by the communists as an open declaration of the Cold War. Another initiative of Truman’s, the Marshall Plan, was an initiative to provide aid to Western Europe. It was made available to every country involved in the war but to receive help, each country had to support democracy and free elections. Abu Sayaff Profile of a Terrorist Essay Sample free essay sample

Introduction Terrorism has become a planetary by-word. After the 9/11 onslaught. of which so much has already been written and reported. terrorist act has come to take a new dimension. Now. every clip a bomb has exploded. people think about terrorists. Whenever one rides a plane. he can non but pray that his flight won’t be hijacked by a terrorist group. Blame lay partially on media which has blown the issue of terrorist act out of proportion. Or had it? Possibly. it is high clip that people take a expression at what terrorist act is and how it affects our day-to-day life. How can one distinguish ideological battle from field terrorist act? The great divide between the two is so brumous it is rather hard to analyze unless everything is taken apart and studied intensively. So what so is terrorist act? For the ballad adult male. terrorist act is merely an act of force against guiltless civilians by a individual or a group of people to either addition attending to or to prosecute their instance. To be more precise. terrorist act may either be ideologically motivated or it could merely be an act of to pull attending. Recently. terrorist act has been carried out in the name of faith ( Juergensmeyer 2000 ) . In this instance. force is perceived to be a symbolic act instead than a strategic act. Most of the clip. nevertheless. terrorist act does non neglect to seed panic. Fear can non be eradicated when we talk about terrorist act. After all. terrorist act does affect the loss of substructure and lives. Largely. terrorist act is conducted in countries where the chief marks of the title are found ; guiltless bystanders merely acquire caught in the political game. In past occasions. it is non surprising to see terrorists giving their life to contend for the cause that they do believe in. But in other instances. like Osama Bin Laden of the Al Qaeda Group. terrorist merely vanish from the face of the Earth merely to raise in ulterior old ages after be aftering another complicated and earthshaking terrorist onslaught. If we think right down to it. the activities that terrorists carry out may non needfully differ from the activities being conducted by the armed forces in their operations – infiltration. blackwash. bombardment Bridgess. hand-to-hand combat. In other words. we can safely state that the mode by which terrorists and military carry out their missions are about the same. Merely. they differ in their motive. Acerate leaf to state. after the 9/11 onslaughts. even those organisations that are non related to Al Qaeda have been touted as an belowground cell of this arguably most ill-famed terrorist group. One such group is the Abu Sayaff Group ( ASG ) which has besides made itself ill-famed by the series of snatchs and decapitations it executed the past few old ages. The ASG has been known to nobbling American tourers and for maintaining them in concealing for months until a ransom is paid. As one of the most ill-famed terrorist groups in Southeast Asia. the ASG has gained notoriety all over the universe. In fact. it is said to be one of Osama Bin Laden’s most powerful cohorts in the universe. History of the Abu Sayaff Group Literally intending â€Å"Bearer of the Sword. † the Abu Sayaff is based in Southern Philippines. but its influence and power spans that of the whole Southeast Asia. specifically in the adjacent Malaysia and Indonesia. Officially. the group’s official ground for stria is to set up an Muslim province in Western Mindanao or in the Southernmost portion of the Philippine archipelago. However. alternatively of negociating with the authorities for this end – the manner the Moro National Liberation Front ( MILF ) or the Moro Islamic Liberation forepart ( MILF ) have – the ASG pursued a different way. Today. they are more known to be brigands who do nil by terrorize guiltless people. extort money from aliens. and to kill people on their caprice in an attempt to derive domestic. every bit good as international. support. So. did Osama Bin Laden truly form the ASG as has late been rumored? Again. officially. the laminitis of the ASG is Abdurajak Janjalani. an Muslim bookman and mujahidin in the Afghan-Soviet war. Janjalani dreamed of organizing an Muslim State in Muslim-dominated Mindanao after he returned from his surveies in Saudi Arabia and Libya. The ASG’s first functionary mission which was recorded by the media was the bombardment of a ship in Zamboanga City on August 1991. This was done at the same time with the grenade onslaught launched on the public public presentation of Christian Missionaries in the same country. It must be understood that the Philippines is fundamentally a Catholic state and merely Mindanao is peopled by Muslims. Even so. many of these hard-core Muslims detest the fact that Christians are easy gaining their niche in Mindanao political relations. Consequently. the ASG launched onslaughts on Catholic folds ; abduction of spiritual instructors shortly followed. The terrorist activities of the ASG were chiefly confined in little countries in Mindanao and they barely captured media involvement. Probably miffed by this looking rebuff. it launched a monolithic snatch of both local and foreign tourers in Sipadan Island near Malaysia on April 23. 2000. Among those who were seized were several aliens. As the dialogue for the release of the sureties dragged on for yearss. the ASG eventually managed to capture media attending. Consequently. the universe stopped to watch the breath-taking incident even as Filipino authorities functionaries scrambled to denote that everything was still â€Å"under control. † Suddenly. the Abu Sayaff Group – one time nameless and vague – took centre phase. At that point the ASG already knew their tactics and so they besides held hostage several international journalists who were caught covering the event. In return for their freedom. a ransom was demanded to be paid. Since so. the ASG has emerged from its parochial end of set uping an Islamic State in Southern Philippines to concentrate on international personal businesss such as the initiation of a committee that was to better the predicament of cultural Filipinos life or working in Malaysia. The ASG besides used its planetary range to beat up international support for the release of alleged 9/11 bomber Ramsey Yousef from captivity. Furthermore. it was under the leading of Janjalani that the ASG was plugged into the international belowground web of Islamic activists being financially supported by the fleeting Osama bin Laden. It was later surmised that the ASG’s ties with the Al Qaeda Group were strong and. in fact. many of its members have claimed that they trained strictly in Afghanistan. Janjalani’s brother. interim. purportedly perfected his military accomplishments in Libya. ASG and the Al Qaeda: A friendly relationship forged Since so. the nexus between the ASG and the Al Qaeda was seemed to hold been forged. It was even reported that Zamboanga City in Mindanao was already being frequented by Al Qaeda members. However. the best yardstick of Al Qaeda’s turning nexus with the ASG was the friendship developing between Janjalani and Osama Bin Laden’s brother in jurisprudence. Saudi Arabian man of affairs Mohammed Jamal Khalifa. It was said that the Saudi businessman’s Islamic charities and the university he founded in Zamboanga were really used to finance the activities of Islamic extremist in the Philippines and its adjacent Moslem states. Khalifa’s organisation — the International Islamic Relief Organization — has an office in Zamboanga. It was through this foundation that the ASG was said to hold received money and preparation from the Al Qaeda. Yet. the biggest and most of import terrorist onslaughts that were being planned by the ASG were about to be foiled. Through the fiscal backup of the AL Qaeda. the ASG began plotting two immense enterprises: to assassinate the Pope during a visit to the Catholic Philippines. and to blow up 12 U. S. civilian airliners. all in one fatal twenty-four hours. Unfortunately. destiny intervened and the programs did non force through because Ramsey Yousef’s flat so caught fire. In malice of the defeated efforts that could even be seen as the errors merely newcomers could perpetrate. the US authorities began to see the ASG non merely as a major security menace to the Philippines. but to the whole universe every bit good. The US and the Filipino authorities declared the ASG as terrorists. Terrorism on the upswing In 1998. Janajalani died and the ASG split into three sliver groups that were less focussed. Each turned to barbarous slayings and snatchs to prolong its operations. After allegedly obtaining about $ 25 million from Libyan leader Muhammar Qadhafi to liberate their sureties in March 2000. the ASG became wholly consumed by the fiscal wagess of their terrorist Acts of the Apostless and became wholly corrupt ( Dillon 2007 ) . The $ 25 million that was supposed to assist them return back into the crease of jurisprudence was alternatively usage to secure more powerful weaponries and to enroll more immature ground forcess. Of class. the rumour that some corrupt authorities functionaries were besides involved in the wining minutess no longer surprises many. More and more. the activities by the ASG are being motivated by money. Kidnappings proved to be profitable. so why non make it more frequently? The nationality of the victim no longer affairs. every bit long as somebody’s traveling to pay the ransom. Besides. as slaying and Gore were going the group’s basic. their schemes were being dictated by bizarre leaders whose subject was found wanting. Some leaders were even into narcotics maltreatment. Still. more and more snatchs and slayings were staged. In return. more and more ransom was paid. Around 300 Filipino soldiers have already died in the battle to acquire rid of the ASG. but to no help. ASG Membership The ASG was estimated to hold several 100s of members ; this. despite the claim of the Filipino authorities that a important figure of them has already surrendered and returned into the crease of jurisprudence. The attractive force of ASG was chiefly channeled through fiscal wagess. This is the ground why the authorities had slightly intensified its support plans and undertakings in Mindanao. In fact. many of the agribusiness and piscaries livelihood undertakings in Mindanao are being tailored to accommodate the demands of these rebel returnees. An American war excessively? The Philippine battle to get the better of the Abu Sayaff Group has lured the involvement of its most fervent political spouse – the United States of America. In fact. the US authorities may hold played a immense portion in the history of the ASG. It must be noted that while most of the ASG victims were Filipinos. Americans were besides premier marks. In 1993. ASG held surety an American Bible transcriber while in 2000. it besides kidnapped an American Muslim sing Jolo Island. The latter was done in exchange of the United States government’s release of Ramzi Yousef and Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman ( Dillon 2007 ) . The ASG besides kidnapped local business communities but they reckoned it was more profitable for them to nobble foreign subjects. particularly Americans. Although the US authorities has extended its aid through weaponries contribution and preparations. the ASG is still alive and good deep in Basilan’s Mohajid Mountain – a jungle so heavy that it is virtually impenetrable. As in the Vietnam terrain. many American soldiers are non familiar with the Mindanao topography and therefore. prosecuting the ASG has become rather impossibleness. However. this fact has non deterred even former Alliess – the MNLF and MILF – to make out to the ASG brigands and promote them to give up. Criticism on Abu Sayyaf Because of its ceaseless ill fame. the ASG received eternal unfavorable judgments even from other Islamic communities. In fact. the more influential Organization of the Islamic Conference ( OIC ) denounced the Sipadan snatch and offered to assist obtain the freedom of the sureties. On the other manus. the authorities of Libya accused the ASG of already go againsting the instructions of Islam. One of the more terrible critics of the ASG was Islamic bookman Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi who denounced violent deaths and kidnap-for-ransom flings that the ASG would perpetrate ( Dillon 2007 ) . He pointed out that these activities were neither political nor ideological enterprises. He besides said that such Acts of the Apostless merely did the Muslim community ill service as people start looking at Muslims in a more negative position. At this point. all Muslims were already by and large perceived as terrorists and he said that these activities did non assist elate such misconception. Qaradawi was known to back up the rights of Muslim Filipinos. Law enforcement and the ASG The Filipino authorities – with the assistance of the US – has tried its best to capture the leaders of the ASG so as to halt its illegal operations in Southern Philippines. Unfortunately. many of these brigands or terrorists manage to evade the governments. This has badly affected Mindanao as even guiltless civilians are killed during military operations. Possibly. it is non conclusive to state that jurisprudence enforcement is weak in this instance as there are other factors involved in scene. One such factor is the alleged engagement of some Filipino authorities functionaries in the snatchs. It was rumored clip and once more that some of these functionaries even promote the snatchs because they get a portion in the ransom money being paid by the family/relatives of the sureties. Another factor to see is the belowground aid that is being supplied by international terrorists to back up the illegal activities of the ASG. As has been pointed out clip and once more. the Al Qaeda may be financially back uping the ASG if merely to beef up itself in the over all web of terrorist act. Intelligence studies that some of the high ranking functionaries of the Al Qaeda and their relations had been spotted in Mindanao. and therefore hold fueled the guesss. Indeed. the counter-terrorism programs of the Filipino authorities have non weakened the Abu Sayaff Group even if recently it has been believed that its top leaders were already dead. So far. the ballyhoo on the snatchs and the terrorist activities has rather slowed down but this is non an confidence that the local jurisprudence hatchet mans were already winning their war against terrorist act. In fact. recent bombardments in widespread Metro Manila have. one time once more. sparked rumours that these terrorists are merely taking it decelerate so they can reorganize and garner their strength in readying for more bloody operations. The jurisprudence hatchet mans in the Capital are agitated as they seem to be frequently caught off guard by the onslaughts of this worldly ill-famed terrorist group. Law enforcement and terrorist act Over-all. terrorist act has become widespread. However. there is this misconception that one time bombardments and snatchs are held. it would ever be done by Muslim extremists. In most instances. they are but it is rather unjust to fault all Muslims for the wickednesss of a few of them. As a consequence of the negative promotion. torment of Muslims has been known to go on around the universe. In fact. jurisprudence hatchet mans frequently zero in on Muslims at airdromes and other public topographic points. Moslems are the first to be suspects when terrorist act occurs. This is non a just intervention but who can fault jurisprudence hatchet mans when history has already established some sort of form on this? Today. jurisprudence hatchet mans have learned that counter-terrorism steps are the lone manner to keep peace and order in their several communities. If there is anything that has been learned during the 9/11 onslaughts. it was that jurisprudence hatchet mans should non go forth a individual rock unturned in their attempts to battle terrorist act ( Bailey 1996 ) . If at some point they were under gauging the terrorists. the 9/11 onslaught proved to them that these hardcore terrorists would non save their lives in an attempt to progress what they believe in. Law hatchet mans learned the difficult manner that extremists – like the Al Qaeda – and terrorists – like the ASG – will halt at nil to be able to foster their ends. It is hence up to these jurisprudence hatchet mans to develop steps that would guarantee that these illegal and detrimental activities be stopped. On the other manus. the quandary of jurisprudence hatchet mans does non halt at that place. Many human rights groups have denounced the manner authoritiess have been hassling people suspected to be terrorists and this does non assist the counter-terrorist steps being put in topographic point by jurisprudence hatchet mans ( Rand 2007 ) . Still. these human rights group argued that there is a differentiation between intelligence and jurisprudence enforcement and that lines have to carefully drawn between them. And yet. intelligence is portion of counter-terrorism steps excessively. How so can this job be solved to protect national security? In the terminal. terrorist act should be considered as both a jurisprudence enforcement and intelligence affair. Adequate support should be given to jurisprudence hatchet mans so they could transport out counter-terrorism programs without a enlistment. It is besides imperative to acquire the cooperation of the community every bit far as intelligence in concerned. After all. without their proper cognition. it is the ordinary people who may be in regular contact with these terrorists in their thick. In hindsight. jurisprudence hatchet mans committed many errors prior to the 9/11 onslaughts but its bloody wake should hold taught them a lesson non to sabotage the capableness of these blood-thirsty brigands. In malice of the go oning war against terrorist act. it remains a powerful menace to national – if non planetary – security. The duty to weaken. if non wholly eradicate – these terrorist groups lies on the shoulders of our jurisprudence hatchet mans ; hence. the a uthorities should concentrate honest attempts in oppressing them to salvage 1000s of lives. # # # Beginnings: Bailey. Initial parts of the novel Essay Example For Students

Initial parts of the novel Essay In Of Mice and Men, the characters Candy and Crooks features at the bottom of the Tyler Ranch hierarchy. Throughout, the novella both Candy and Crooks are coherent with the themes of loneliness, friendship, dreams and the predatory nature exemplified in the microcosm of American society, that is the Tyler Ranch.  The reader is introduced to the characters of Candy within the initial parts of the novel. He appears as a ‘swamper’, one of the degraded jobs in the ranch he has earned, partly due to his age, as well as being incapacitated by his lost hand. It becomes apparent that he introduces most of the characters before they actually appear themselves. Candy is likewise used to identify and provide insight onto the lives of the ranch workers. When he shows George and Lennie the bunkhouse, he provides information such as the blacksmith named ‘Whitey’. It is also through Candy that the itinerant nature of the ranch life is emphasized with how the workers including the blacksmith leave for another ranch. Candy also provides first impressions of the characters such as Curley’s wife, initially describing her as ‘purty’ and then as a ‘tart’, while describing the boss as a ‘hell of a nice fella.’ The significance of Candy is illustrated through the death of his dog, which represents the end of Candy’s only true long-term relationship and portrays the ruthless era of 1930s America. In addition, Steinbeck likens the two relationships of George and Lennie, and Candy and his dog, by using a simile to compare Lennie to a dog ‘like a terrier who doesn’t want to give a ball back to his master.’ The death of the dog acts as a parallel and is significant as it foreshadows the death of Lennie, who similarly to the dog has a disability and stands no chance in the vicious circle of 1930s America. Candy is present in Steinbeck’s dominant theme of dreams. The power of George and Lennie’s dream of a simple life on an idyllic farm rests in its ability to soothe the afflicted, as for Lennie after the incident involving Curley’s hand and Candy after his dog dies. When Candy hears of their dream he is pathetically eager to join them, he offers his life savings towards the purchase of the farm. True to the nature of tragedy, Steinbeck makes the vision of the farm so beautiful, and so close to reality and the fraternal bond between George and Lennie so strong, in order to place his protagonists at a considerable height from which to fall. True to the nature of tragedy, Steinbeck makes the vision of the farm so beautiful, and so close to reality and the fraternal bond between George and Lennie so strong, in order to place his protagonists at a considerable height from which to fall. On the other hand, the character of Crooks is yet another indispensable character in the novel. Appearing very briefly in one chapter, Steinbeck is able to prove his worth and importance effectively. Crooks is initially described through the voice of Candy, as the ‘nigger’ who was ‘given hell by the boss.’  When the reader is first introduced to Crooks, his possessions are revealed which entirely summarise his qualities. The ‘big alarm clock’ he owns, ‘the number of shoes and boots’ are clear examples of how he takes care of himself while briefly revealing how he to is a victim of loneliness. The fact that his medicine bottles are mired with the horses reduces him to the state of an animal, further emphasising on the discrimination he undergoes. In addition to that, he also owns a number of books to which he compensates loneliness with while the ‘California Civil Code’ is another example of his personal obligation to racism and human rights. .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 , .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .postImageUrl , .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 , .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:hover , .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:visited , .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:active { border:0!important; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:active , .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644 .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u881be5671d2e49736854ce92b5143644:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Sherlock Holmes stories EssayCrook’s first piece of dialogue is the striking question ‘why don’t I got a right to have a light?’ which hints at his personal view on racism in the ranch. It is Crooks’ ‘proud and aloof’ nature that is his only defence of the harsh consequences of racism. Given that he is forbidden from coming into the bunkhouse, he briefly challenges Lennie as well upon entering his own cabin, an implication that results from his degradation in the ranch. In this way, Crooks is able to mirror the harsh existence of discrimination and violence put up against black people in the Great Depression. When Crooks comes to understand how Lennie and George are ‘workin’ up a stake’ to ‘live of the fatta the lan’, he challenges the perception skillfully. By stating how this concept of obtaining the dream is ‘just like heaven’, he prophetically claims ‘nobody gets a piece of heaven’ and that ‘it’s all just in their heads.’ This prophetic assumption only turns to be tragically and inevitably true in the end. However, Crooks also appears to be drawn into the magnetic quality of the dream, once Candy convinces him but afterwards professes ‘I was just jokin’. Crooks also appears to be one of the tragic victims of loneliness; he sadly confesses to Lennie ‘Its just bein’ with another guy’, ‘it’s just the talkin’, which reveals his desire to find a companion to simply talk to. The fact that ‘a guy goes nuts without anybody’ becomes true as Crooks becomes jealous of Lennie’s friendship with George, to an extent that it drives him to torment Lennie on how ‘suppose George never comes back’. This tragic and lonely existence of Crooks is also reinforced with how Curley’s wife threatens to have him lynched, which ‘reduced him to nothing.’ Crooks as a result, portrays the archetype of people ostracized by their race. Candy and Crooks are unique characters but have certain similarities. Steinbeck employs them to reveal two brief examples of how people are discriminated in society. They both suffer from the tormenting nature of loneliness, and are ensnared by their own disabilities. Hence trapped in the oppressively harsh nature of the microcosm of American society, that is the Tyler Ranch. I believe that both Crooks and Candy are tow characters who help to render the tragic and depressing nature of ranch life, while individually contributing their roles to the novel: Crooks as the discriminated stable-buck suffering from loneliness and Candy as the man torn between life and his debilitating age.

Human Resource Planning Essays - Human Resource Management, Salary

Human Resource Planning for New Locations of Mother Earth Foods Abstract Mother Earth Foods Company plans to open five new store locations, all scheduled to open in two months. Currently no human resource ( HR) tasks have been completed to begin the process to staff these new locations. Jenna has just been hired and has been asked to complete all tasks necessary in order for the new locations to open at the scheduled time. Through this review, Jenna will address all of the various sectors that will need to be completed and she will include what she recommends and what other options are available. The various sectors that will be included are; compensation, training, recruitment, hiring, and benefits. Along with her specific recommendations, Jenna will also spell out the advantages and disadvantages for the various options. At the end of the review, Jenna?s HR strategic plan will be available for review by management along with the time constrains needed to complete all tasks while remaining in compliance with all State and Federal Rules and Regulations. Human Resource Planning for New Locations of Mother Earth Foods Mother Earth Foods is a quick developing company that offers organically grown food to consumers. This company?s mission is to have an organization that does no harm to earth. Jenna is working to prepare the company for opening five new locations in two months. To begin the process Jenna needs to become familiar with the labor market in the area of Portland, Maine. In order to do this, Jenna should research websites such as the Bureau of Labor and Statistics or Maine?s Department of Labor which offers a Labor Market Digest each month, to see what the past and current trends are and what the current demands are in this location. Before determining the wage/salary that is going to be offered, Jenna needs to find out if the company is going to be offering benefits to its employees. Offering no benefits is going to require a higher salary since employees are going to have to pay for benefits out of pocket. Often, benefits are offered to attract and retain employees. If it is decided to offer benefits for employees, then Jenna is required to work with the various health insurance companies to work on what benefits will be offered and available to employees. It will also need to be decided as to how much the company is going to cover for benefits and what the cost is going to be per employee. This will all be taken into account when determining the wage/salary that is going to be offered to the various employees. When determining the compensation for the new employees there are five major components. The first component that needs to be completed is a job analysis. A job analysis is when positions are analyzed to find out what the exact duties are. ?Job analysis techniques include the use of interviews, questionnaires, and observation.? ("Hr guide to," 2000) Once the job analysis is completed, a detailed job description needs to be developed which will includes all the duties that the employee will be performing. This can be time consuming considering there are numerous positions within the company. A job evaluation will need to be developed. A job evaluation is a comparison of positions used to assure that the level of compensation for specific positions is correct. Once this is completed, the pay structure needs to be determined. In order to complete this, the first step is to number of hours and days that the employee is needed to work needs to be decided upon. Deciding whether the new em ployees are going to be hourly or salary will be another thing that needs to be completed. Most of the time in this industry, management is set on a salary basis and the other employees are paid on an hourly rate. When setting the wages/salary, Jenna must comply with the Federal Minimum Wage set forth by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and State minimum wage amount that is determined for every employee. In Maine, the current minimum wage rate is $7.50 which is higher than the federal rate. ("Minimum wage laws," 2010). Determining whether the employees will be exempt or non-exempt

Super Bowl Slang Get It Right!

Super Bowl Slang Get It Right! Football has a language of it’s own, and not knowing it can make you feel like an alien from another planet. Fortunately, you’ve been around long enough to know what a touchdown looks like, what happens when a QB gets sacked, or how to recognize the â€Å"snap.† Instead of Football Terminology for Dummies, you need a specific set of new vocabulary to get you prepared for Superbowl 49. That way, you’ll know exactly what’s going on when the Patsies and the Seachickens have their final showdown. Blitz This is when the defense of a team sends an angry mob after the quarterback. Teams that tend to stack the line of scrimmage with rush linebackers instead of defensive players may be looking to aggressively blitz. This is also called â€Å"The Psycho Defense.† Goal Line Stand This happens when the defense continually stops the offense just before it gets into the end zone. The goal is to hold the offensive team and get them to waste their downs to force a turnover. Hail Mary This is the â€Å"miracle play† that dreams (and dollars) are made of. It’s a long, desperate pass by the QB to a player at the other end of the field. It doesn’t work very often, but when it does, your mind is blown away by sheer awesomeness. Pick Six When the offensive team throws a pass that is intercepted and then taken downfield by the defending team for a touchdown. This is a completely exhilarating play, unless you’re on the offensive team. Then, it’s just embarrassing. Sam, Mike, Will Every team will have these guys as players, even though they’ll never show up on the roster. These are all names for typical player positions on the field, and are derived from the initials of the position. In a 4-3 alignment, with four lineman in the front and three behind, the strong-lined linebacker is Sam, the middle linebacker is Mike, and the weak-lined linebacker is Will. Leo/Elephant Similar to Sam, Will, and Mike, this is a position on the field, although it is not necessarily a linebacker or defensive position specifically. It is derived from the terms â€Å"linebacker† and â€Å"end,† and the organization of the letters specify when the position is more defensive or offensive. Jack This, too, is a moniker for a player position, although it is not truly specified. The Jack, or â€Å"jack of all trades,† is a surprise position, usually not revealed as defensive or offensive until the play is in motion. Deflategate Following the AFC championship game between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, NFL referees investigated a tip that some of the game balls had been deflated by the Patriots. This is a violation of the NFL rule that requires balls to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch. Eleven of the 12 balls used during the game were found to be underinflated, potentially giving the Pats an edge over the competition. Legion Of Boom Due to the hard-hitting nature of the Seattle Seahawks defense, they have been dubbed by sports aficionados as the â€Å"Legion of Boom.† Members include all defensive backs, including Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Byron Maxwell, and Brandon Browner. Evil Empire This is a derogatory term in reference to the New England Patriots, especially in light of Coach Bill Bellichick’s â€Å"Spygate† scandal, which led to a $25,000 fine for his illegal taping of opponents’ plays. Bellichick’s consistent wearing of hoodies during games added to the effect, giving him the nickname of â€Å"Emperor Bellichick,† the evil lord of the Patriot Empire. Gronk Spike, The Gronk New England Patriot player, Rob Gronkowski, is known for his violent treatment of a football once it’s in the end zone. In fact, Gronkowski claims that his excessive force is one of the reasons why Deflategate occurred, tweeting a meme, â€Å"Warning: Gronking may cause deflation.† Patsies This is the favored slur for the Patriots when the team is not playing very well. Others include the Evil Empire, Homeland Defense, Tea Men, Pattycakes, and Patties. Seagulls This is the favored slur for the Seahawks when the team is not playing very well. Others include Seachickens, Cheesehawks, Seahacks, and Water Rats. Tom Terrific A nickname given to Tom Brady due to his impressive history of amazing game-play: 3 Super Bowls, 2 League MVPs, 2 Super Bowl MVPs and the regular season record for passing touchdowns. Superbowl 49 will be his sixth. Beast Mode Marshawn Terrell Lynch is a running back for the Seahawks, and one of the most aggressive running players in the league. He is nicknamed â€Å"Beast Mode† due to his ability to break tackles and bones alike. The 12th Man, or The 12s This is a nickname give to the Seahawk fans because of their ability to scream so loudly they often cause the offensive lineman to false start. They are such a huge part of the Seahawks’ success, supporting the 11 field men so passionately, that they have been dubbed â€Å"The 12th Man.† The Seahawks retired the number 12 jersey in 1984 in appreciation of their fans.

Jane Addams' Vision of Democracy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Jane Addams' Vision of Democracy - Essay Example She spent seven years after her graduation trying to identify a worthwhile career. (US Political thought). In search of clarity, she made two trips to Europe. The first was in 1883-85. The second was in 1887-88. During her second trip she visited Toynbee Hall and was greatly influenced by what she saw. She decided to establish a similar settlement house in Chicago. Joining hands with her friend Ellen Gates Starr, she opened the Hull House in September 1889. The life history of Jane Addams is marked by ups and downs. The ebbs and tides of social recognition she received were severe and strong. Her defense of the anarchists following the assassination of the President William McKinlev (September 1901) showed her in poor light. But it was her stand against the involvement of America in the First World War that brought her name and fame to a record low level. The negative feedbacks never slowed her down. Jean Bethke Elshtain points out, "Elizabeth Dilling described Jane Addams as a dangerous radical masquerading as a saintly champion of the poor." (Elshtain 19) Jane Addams seemed to accept bouquets and brickbats gracefully. She was continuing on her chosen path. In 1931 she was awarded the honorary doctorate by the University of Chicago. In the same year, she got Nobel Award jointly with Nicholas Murray Butler. The beautiful life sketch drawn by Jean Bethke Elshtain brings out vividly how Jane Addams who fought to improve the living standards of the residents of Hull House, was drawn into the realms of dangerous and seedy realms of Chicago politics; how her insistence upon peace and justice at international level, made lose her popularity at national level; and how, in due course her relentless fight for peace gradually removed the national scorn; and again, she gained recognition at national and international levels. Though Jane Addams' fame did slide down sometimes, her sincere work has carved a niche for her in the minds of the people. A proof for this is that her book 'Twenty Years at Hull-House' in which she has given a description of her early years has never gone out of print since its first publication in 1910. Jane Addams was admired as a respectable social worker, fighter for the rights of women and downtrodden, an intellectual, effective writer and a political activist. She highlighted by her own example that the core of true citizenship was the concern for others' difficulties and concerted efforts to be of help to all. In her vision of democracy, by personal example, she laid rules for true citizens. By defining true citizens, by emphasizing direct participation in social life, she defined democracy. Jean Bethke Elshtain, who was determined "to draw back the curtain of historic mist and dust that has obscured Addams and blurred her reputation", has provided the most appropriate source to understand Jane Addams' vision of American Democracy. Addams did believe in Democracy. Her father had given her a concept of democracy. learnt from Abraham Lincoln, his one time political acquaintance. We all know that the most simple, direct and evocative definition of Democracy, "Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people." has come down to us from Abraham Lincoln. Addams had been initiated into this personally by her father in her formative years. So her vision of dem
